Sales of Tablets to Exceed 269 Million Units in 2019

The main driver of demand for tablets will be coming from the commercial sector, with shipments estimated to exceed 269 million units by 2019, according to the IDC research firm. This year, the number of sold tablets is expected to reach 234.5 million units, which is an increase of 2.1 percent compared to last year.

Although in the 4th quarter of 2014 shipments fell 3.2 percent with 76.1 million units sold, IDC still predicts a slow but continuous growth in years to come. Table manufacturers have been lowering prices to attract more customers, in addition to introducing special features like voice calling.

India has seen an increase in tablet sale with 0.96 million units sold in the period between October and December 2014, which is a 3.4 percent increase compared to the previous quarter.

When it comes to platforms, Android is set to remain on top with the almost 63-percent share of the market, which is a small decline compared to last year when Android held 67.3 percent share. Before Android, Apple was the market leader, but the IDC now predicts that their market share will decline this year to 25.6 percent. That is lower than the share they had over the course of last three years.

When it comes to Windows, their market share is likely to rise from 5.1 percent in 2014 to seven percent in 2015 until it finally reaches the market share summing up to 14.1 percent in 2019. Microsoft is expected to launch Windows 10 this year which will significantly increase their existence on the market, IDC Research Director Tablets Jean-Philippe Bouchard said.
